Council approve residential development on former imperial building site behind Cardiff Central station.

Approval to build a residential development on the site of a former commercial space has been given by local councillors.

Property company Portabella is working in partnership with CW Architects to regenerate the old imperial buildings south of Cardiff Central station, into over 100 flats comprising one and two-bedrooms.

In 2015 Portabella acquired the site on Trade Street, known for its variety of uses over recent years, most notably the supply of building materials throughout the period of Cardiff’s growth and development.

Paying homage to the culture surrounding the site, Portabella will complement the aptly-named development Brickworks’ existing industrial surroundings with a predominantly new build warehouse style development behind a retained façade incorporating a notable pair of Victorian villas.

A unit suitable for retail, café/restaurant and other commercial uses will also be provided, together with 45 parking spaces.

David Loosemore, managing director of Portabella, said:

“We’re thrilled to have received Cardiff Council’s approval for the development.

“We chose this location as it is an area rich in cultural history, and one that sits amidst Cardiff Council’s nominated Enterprise Zone. It’s an exciting part of the city which is set to be transformed over the coming years and Portabella is keen to create a building with its own unique sense of place to whilst complementing the area’s architecture. We hope to add another dimension, embracing the area’s growing bohemian scene and our plan for the mixed-use scheme marks the first investment in the street since the 1980s.

“We aim to commence work in spring 2017 with the completion date expected autumn 2018”.
